SURGEON UROLOGIST ANDROLOGIST IOANNIS VAKALOPOULOS

The surgeon urologist andrologist Dr. Ioannis Vakalopoulos was born on October 14, 1965 in Thessaloniki.

He graduated from High School with honors and in 1983 has been admitted to the Medical School of the University of Patras, from which he graduated with honors in 1989. After completing his military service and his service as a field (community) doctor, he specialized in Urology, at the Urology Clinic of Ippokrateio General Hospital of Thessaloniki, from 1993 to 1997. 

In 1997, after passing the exams of the Hellenic Urological Association, he was awarded a 1,000,000 drachmas scholarship (the “Apostolos Deliveriotis” scholarship).

Furthermore, he received a special training in the placement of prosthetic materials (penile prostheses, incontinence devices etc.) in the USA and in Germany.

In 1998 he received the title of Fellow of the European Board of Urology (FEBU), after passing the international exams. Afterwards, he specialized in Andrology and Urogynecology – Neurourology for 18 months, at the Institute of Urology and Nephrology of the University College London.

In 2000 he completed his doctoral thesis at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with Honors. He has been recently awarded, after having passed international exams, the title of Fellow of the European Committee for Sexual Medicine (FECSM). From 2000 to 2002 he worked as a science fellow in the Clinic of Urinary Organs of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and from November 2003 to June 2006 he served in the 1st Urology Clinic of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki as head of the Andrology Medical Office. In December 2005 he was elected Lecturer of Urology of the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In December 2009 he was promoted to Assistant Professor of Urology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Since then, he works at the 1st Urology Clinic of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which is headquartered at the “Georgios Gennimatas” General Hospital of Thessaloniki, as head of the Medical Office of Sexual Dysfunctions and Infertility. In parallel, he works since 1999 as a private medical doctor.

He has participated as speaker in more than 100 Greek and international conferences and is the author of 30 internationally published and 20 published in Greece full articles as well as of tens of summaries of works in scientific magazines. He is a work reviewer in international scientific magazines and has participated in two international andrology research projects. Finally he has worked as an instructor of the American Medical Systems corporation in the domain of placement of penile prostheses and sphincters.

Treatment of diseases

The surgeon urologist andrologist Dr. Ioannis Vakalopoulos deals with the entire range of modern urology, being specialized in sexual medicine and andrology and particularly in the following sectors: erectile dysfunction, ejaculation disorders, sexual desire disorders, chronic pelvic pain – chronic prostatitis syndromes, penis disorders (such as penile curvature, congenital or acquired, due to the Peyronie’s disease, where all the range of penis straightening operations can be performed, including penile implant operations).

Furthermore, he can perform penis lengthening and thickening operations in cases of micropenis. He can undertake the pharmaceutical and surgical treatment of male infertility, as well as the treatment of cryptorchidism and testicular tumors and the microsurgical treatment of varicocele.

He has performed the largest number of operations of hydraulic penile prosthesis implanting in Northern Greece, for the treatment of drug-resistant erectile dysfunction. In this context, patients have the possibility of communicating with other patients, who have already proceeded to this particular operation, in order to benefit from the experience of the latter. The doctor is also particularly active in the domain of diagnosis and treatment both of female and male urinary incontinence, where he has, once more, treated the largest number of patients in Northern Greece. Depending on the cause, the treatment which is selected is either the intravesical Botox injection, or the placing of bands or artificial sphincters.
